Does “No Touch Freight” Matter for Truck Drivers?

As a truck driver, your job is to get your freight from point A to point B as quickly (and safely) as possible. But some companies like to try and add responsibilities to that. For example, loading and unloading your freight from your truck.

If that isn’t something you want to be responsible for, you’ll want to make sure that “no-touch freight” is listed in your contract.

No-touch freight is exactly what it sounds like.  You don’t have to touch the freight that you’re hauling. Whether you’re picking it up or delivering it, it’s loaded and unloaded for you. This is great for truck drivers for a few reasons.

It Saves You Time

Both the loading and unloading process can take a fair amount of time depending on what you’re carrying. No touch freight gives you a chance to get a quick nap, give someone a call, or just relax while the freight is being taken care.

Less Liability for You

Operating a truck on the road is enough liability for any given driver. Handling the freight on a loading dock adds a whole other level of liability on top of that. With elevated platforms, heavy cargo, and machinery like forklifts and dock ramps, a lot can go wrong in a loading bay.

Especially if you’re unfamiliar with it.

With no-touch freight, the loading zones have their own team that knows the proper procedures, taking the pressure off of you.

Safety

Freight isn’t the only thing at risk of being damaged in a loading area. Moving and lifting freight can result in some serious injury, especially for someone who just spent a few hours sitting in a truck. When drivers have to help load and unload their trucks, they greatly increase their chances of back, shoulder, and neck injuries.

Forklifts and pallet jackets can cause serious damage to feet and legs as well. With no-touch freight, you can stay at a safe distance.
